The four of us went on a journey down the coast to watch the turtles lay eggs. It was an amazing experience for all. From staying in a straw hut (that Darian reckons is from the 3 little pigs), to getting up at 3am to watch the turtles lay eggs and then make their way back to the sea at sunrise.

When it rains it pours

When it rains here, it pours.....Well it rained here for 30 minutes and as a result of having no drainage systems, puddles turn into lakes and create flooding.
Everything shuts down, schools, offices, etc. Unless you have 4 wheel drive,(which many do) it is almost impossible to drive down certain roads. One puddle/river was over the hoods of cars!!!! The sad thing is that none of the rain water is recycled and to think of many countries who suffer from draughts, it seems so wasteful. Anyways, I suppose the bright side is that we get a lot of holidays.

Dubai

We drove across the border to Dubai recently and what an adventure that was!!!
Dubai reminded me of Hong Kong only on a bigger scale. It is very Western compred to where we live.
We got to catch up with some of our Aussie friends, and explore as well. We went to a great aquarium and played in the snow at Ski Dubai. Riley pretty much confirmed that it would be difficult to live in a cold place...she HATED the whole experience, snow suits, cold noses, the works! I guess she is a Gold Coast baby after all!!

While driving down the road we came across some camels. It was like seeing kangaroos in Australia for the first time....

We stopped and got a good look (and smell....)

We then turned to see that we had attracted some attention. A car stopped and some local children got out to check us out...they likely wondered why we had our video camera out and were so excited about seeing camels (which roam all over the desert!!).

Apparently it never rains in Oman, however when it does there is a great deal of concern!! First of all everyone cheers and the sound of children's laughter can be heard in the distance. Secondly the fear sets in and people rush home to safety. You see, there is no gutter system or drains here, consequently there is no where for the rain to go....except up!!! We were fortunate that the rain didn't last too long, although we did get some pretty massive puddles to play in!! (not shown here, I was too busy splashing away!!)

Darian was in a school play and was not shy at all, she melted my heart as I watched her singing at the top her lungs! the pictures aren't so good, however the video captured it all!! The best part was that Riley observed her big sister on stage, and so when it came time for her own performance, she really understood what it was all about...read the next blog for that update!!!

Riley had her first Christmas concert at school. Thanks to the moral support from her big sister, she was able to over come her stage fright. In fact, the 2 Ebert girls stole the show!!!

Nakhal Fort

We visited the stately Nakhal Fort, which was amazing! The fort lies at the junction of plain and mountain, and it's interior has been restored! Not very child friendly, however the children loved exploring (all children, big and small).

Camping part 2

After setting up in a remote part of the desert, we were surprised when some local boys crept up on us and watched from behind a large rock. They didn't speak any English, and my Arabic is limited, however we were able to establish basic communication. They wanted to play.... Riley offered her ball, and Darian sung songs to them. We were then greeted by some local goats who were curious about us as well; luckily Darian is training to be a shephard.

We now have 2 pet fishies. Riley named her's 'Marina' and Darian named her's 'Darian'. Marina and Darian fish have settled into their fish bowl well, and are overfed and loving life at our house. We have been talking a lot about fish lately, and since we saw some locals fishing with a blanket (net) on the beach, Darian has been quite curious. Just wait until she meets her Grandpa Anderson next summer, she will surely catch a big one!!!

Camping adventure

We embarked on our first family camping adventure and what a wonderful weekend we had. Camping in the middle of the desert surrounded by mountains and sea was amazing! The highlight for the kids was not the tent, the donkeys or the fire, it was the chocolate cereal in the morning! What a special treat; Darian wants to go camping all the time now!!!

Indoor parks and fun

There are heaps of indoor carnivals here that offer loads of games and rides including merry-go rounds, roller coasters and arcades. We have been enjoying these so much, especially when it is 48 degrees outside! The girls went on their first roller coaster and what a thrill!!! We even took them on 'the dark ride' which is a roller coaster in the dark!! (I know, we are mean parents)

Holidays

Whether we are at the local beach building castles, or at a resort nearby, we are taking in the scenery and soaking up the sun. (mind you this all happens before 9am, when it is stinking hot outside) It is finally starting to get easier with the girls. As we settle into a totally new life, we are finding that Riley is talking so much and Darian is such a little Mother hen. We are really enjoying them and as busy as they are around the clock, we wouldn't change it for the world!!!

Darian had a little party at school to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The children got to wear what ever they wanted besides their uniforms. The parents were invited to come and watch a little show that the children put together..... You always wonder what your children do when you are not there. I know that when I am there, mine picks her nose!!! How lovely!!

Well we don't live on the Gold Coast anymore, however the beaches are still a lot of fun. Everyone drives on the beach (about 80km/hour) and everyone swims. I have yet to see anyone in a swimsuit, bikini or anything of that sort(besides in resorts) ...instead people do indeed wear traditional clothing into the water. When the tide is high the waves can be quite powerful, and this can only make us all strong swimmers. Or sometimes we just stay at home and skinny dip in our paddling pool in the privacy of a yard.

Well the children seem to attract a lot of attention here, especially Riley. Everyone comments on her 'tan' and I have to explain that I do not put her in the sun, she has a Sri Lankan tan.with the light hair it really throws people off. Darian on the other hand is looking more and more like Rorie and without him present, people wonder where I fit into the equation. I however, look like a western lady behind the wheel, which is a double whammy for less respect on the roads. The drivers here are unreal, and apparently the requirement to teach driving lessons is simply to have held any licence for 3 years. This place was also pure desert not too long ago, and with less paved roads to travel on, there was no need to worry about rules and safety. This is a big problem here and the amount of accidents that occur daily is increasing at a steady pace. In fact there has not been a day yet where I have not witnessed a crash while driving! Having said that, I am so glad that our car seats have arrived, as they are not a law here, some cars don't even have any clamps in the back to anchor them. Children can be found dangling from windows, the sunroof, or sleeping in the back windows. I get a lot of locals checking outmy car seats and of course, me!! I now where a burka on my head while behind the wheel, not to offend anyone, merely to blend in,establish and maintain respect on the roads.

Creatures great and small

We no longer see kangaroos and koalas, however there is an abundance of hermit crabs. They tickle your feet, and the girls are getting used to the feeling after a lot of screaming and carrying on!! The stingers wash up on the beach like in Australia, but the amount of goats in this place is wild!!!! Everyone has a goat, whether it is a pet or a meal, they are everywhere!!! We have yet to see camels besides being transported in the back of a truck, but I'm sure in time we will meet a few close up.

When it is not 45 degrees, we often find water and have a nice warm bath....There are many beautiful resorts nearby that allow day visits and westerners are allowed to wear what they want and eat/drink in public (Ramadan restricts many things for one month). We have been enjoying the sites and living it up as school finishes at 1:00 during Ramadan.

Within the gated community/school grounds there are several playgrounds. The Arabic kindergarten is by far the best choice to play in. The girls love the grass and the spacious layout. The best part is that it is not available for public use; this means no dog poo and no strangers, only local children and families associated with the school. The kids are pretty happy(the big kids too!!!!).

Darian has been drawing people that actually resemble people. Take her puppets for example, she actually convinced me that two of the puppets were Marina and Gramps. (the ones on the right, and the two on the left were Daddy and Mommy!!)

The beach has new meaning

Going to the beach now has a new meaning; we actually drive right to the beach!!! With the cost of petrol being so cheap..( $18 AUD to fill a 3.5litre/V6 with supreme gas) and someone to clean our vehicle daily for $20AUD month, life is good........ (BY THE WAY IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE A DIRTY CAR HERE.....YIKES, IN AUSTRALIA I WOULD BE PUT IN JAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

This blog is all about Darian; she has had a busy week settling into her new school. She now attends a private school where she is learning so much! She came home the other day and told me that she was learning to be 'sensible'. It is a huge adjustment for her, as she attends classes 5 days a week from 8-12.(everything shuts down here between 12 and 4. We are very happy with the education system here and would not be able to afford fees in our own country..(they are insane, like triple the cost of Australian private schools and mind you this is for a 3 year old!!).

Well we are getting settled here. Darian got accepted to an excellent private school where she will be in Kindergarten. We bought a car, so the excitement begins with the crazy driving here. I have seen some very interesting things.....camo jeeps with machine guns mounted to the dash board...(driven by army men), camels being transported in the back of trucks at high speeds, goats randomly crossing the busy roads, and heaps more......

Darian and I bake once a week. We never measure anything, yet somehow our cakes and cookies always turn out perfect. It must be all of the love that goes into the process. Darian has the important job of quality assurance. From start to finish, she carefully samples each batch, in order to ensure nothing but the best. Gotta love it;)

Live for the Moment

Well I am again going to talk about how important it is to enjoy every single day. While going through all of my belongings, I came across my sacred shell collection. I have shells from Bali, Malaysia, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Australia, and these are just naming a few. Each of the shells are sealed in a bag and labelled carefully. I sat and looked at them for a few moments, and memories came flooding back to when and where they each came from. I then thought about what I would do with them. I decided that taking them to another country may be risky, as they are fragile and decided it would be best if I left them in my box of special things which will remain in Australia in my in-laws basement. The girls had then found me and of course had to check the shells out. "Can we play them Mommy?" I was reluctant to answer as I wanted to protect my shells. I then stopped myself. Hey, why can't they play with them? In fact, why not dump them out and so we can enjoy their true beauty. SO I took them outside and placed them along the window ledge, where the kids can touch them. In a few weeks time I can re-evaluate what I will do next with them. Until then, they are on display. Why should we hide and protect gems and save them for a precious day that may never come. Whether it's wearing my special shoes that I had made in Vietnam, or examining my coral that I collected in the past, I can honestly say that my children are the real gifts, and I get to enjoy them every day.

Winter in Australia and Daddy's off

Well Daddy is on holidays again, and we are all happy. Having fifteen plus weeks a year off with pay really has benefits. (I know, no sympathy for teacher's!) Besides the serious bonding that takes place, the kids get 2 primary care givers. It takes so much pressure off of me. The girls insist that Daddy does everything including baths, painting, stories, and playing. We love having our main man around :)

While floating around putting laundry away, I walked by Darian's room and did a double glance. There was Riles, chilling out in big sister's room, with the shades on! As if no one would notice!! I'm glad she likes the idea, we just need to convince 'The Boss' that sharing a room with her little sister is going to be the best experience ever!!!!! ( ;0 )

The last few weeks

Our last few weeks in Australia are becoming interesting, as we find creative ways to have fun. Most of the toys are gone, as well as most of the furniture. We were cleaning out our cupboards, when we came across Rorie's Father's day gift from last year, a remote controlled helicopter. It is quite fragile and therefore we don't want to risk sending it in our luggage. A better alternative, is to use it like there's no tomorrow. So Rorie gave Darian one quick lesson, and boom, she has a new toy (an expensive toy). It's like when you read one of those forwarded emails stating how life is about living in the present moment, and how we should use our good crystal and china everyday and not save things for some future day that may not come. Well here you go....the helicopter is still in one piece, and man were we surprised!!!!

Wild imagination

I have been meaning to write about this for a while now....
Darian was in the bath with her rubber crocodile, when she began role playing. "This iguana lives in the desert; camels live in the desert. When he was born, he hatched out of an egg. My brothers and sisters were there." Where did she come up with that!!??
A few months ago, Rorie was teaching the theme 'mini beasts'. He shared his knowledge with the girls. I recently caught a huge grasshopper and the girls were fascinated. Could this be the source for this episode? Perhaps it was the influence of her new hero Bindi Irwin. Either way, our girls love bugs and creatures, and I think it's wonderful!!

Packing

After our farewell party, we have had a lot happen. Closing this chapter involves many procedures such as packing, packing and more packing!!! We have sold most of our furniture and our 4x4 SUV. We have packed only 6 boxes to ship. We have sorted through all of our belongings, and have managed to get rid of most of them!! Sea mail takes 35 days to ship to our destination, which means our boxes must go out this week!

We are aware that less is more, and what really matters is that we are together as a family. The children sense many changes that lie ahead, and are a little unsure.
Riley does not quite understand, however Darian has figured out that she will fit in a suitcase, and so she can come on the plane! (as opposed to being being shipped) ..............

Farewell Party

We had a big party on the weekend to celebrate Rorie's new job, Darian's birthday (yet again), and to bid farewell to Australia.

I am so blessed to have a cake maker in the family named Super woman Marina!!

There were heaps of activities for the kids and the adults loved my jello shooters....

My husband's clown skills came in handy when he was elected to make balloon animals (and other things......)

I made personalized shakers with the little one's, and we emptied a case of bubbles in the yard...

Our next party will be in the Middle East to celebrate Riley's second year. I am looking forward to hosting that. Perhaps I can offer camel rides for her friends:)
One thing is for sure, it won't be the same without my gorgeous family...

Darian's Birthday Part 2

Well the school party was full of excitement, games, bubbles, chocolate, and fun. With that comes over stimulation and exhaustion.....but it's all worth it. Stay tuned for the next chapter...
And yes..my hair is DARK!!! (that's another story!!)

Most little girls love pink. Well mine loves pink and DINOSAURS!! She has persisted about having a dinosaur balloon for weeks now. I finally found some, just to make her day :) As well as a life size Dora balloon !

Daddy's girl

Most little girls look up to their Dad's, I know I still do. Well Darian has always had a special bond with Rorie that goes beyond words. When you ask her "Who's the best?" She replies "DADDY". Nice. This is not something that she has been trained to say, this has simply been her opinion for the last 3 years. I think that being a teacher has paid off for my husband, as he gets so much time off that allows him to spend quality time with the girls. When Rorie is at home, Darian is glued to him, and he is pretty much on a one meter leash. It is great for me, because I have a lot of freedom.
Darian cries every Monday because Daddy has to goto work. She asks for him countless times each day. I never really took offense to any of this, until recently..... The other night Darian woke up in the night for the first time in over 2 years. She was crying and so I went into her room to console her, and the first thing she said was " Where's Daddy?" I told her that Daddy was in bed, and she cried "I want Daddy". So I had to call him and he came to her rescue. My heart really broke, as usually when a child is hurt, sick, tired or sad, they want Mom, but not mine. She is so affectionate with him, and I can't remember the last time she gave me a cuddle.

I guess in her eyes, Daddy is the best.

Not to be outdone, Riley has always been Daddy's girl as well. Ever since she came home from the hospital, he has bathed her every night and put her to sleep, except for weekends.
Yesterday Rorie took Riley out for the day, and this allowed for some serious bonding. It is so nice when you have one on one with a child. This morning Riley woke up and called "Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-dy", and this evening she wanted him as well. What am I to do!? Besides be grateful for marrying the best husband and Daddy in the world!

Darian's Birthday Part One

Well our oldest daughter is about to turn 3. We weren't going to get her a 'big' pressie this year, as we are about to move countries, however we are entitled to a large shipping allowance, and so we decide to go ahead and buy her a new bike. As the girls are always with me, we took a trip to Toys R' Us and picked out a bike that had a basket for Darian to store all of her trinkets in. I then took the ticket to the check out and paid, and headed to the car, where Darian was quite concerned where her new bike was! We drove to the parcel pick up where her new bike was all boxed up and ready to go. Little did she know, that tools and patience were required to build the bike!!! That's where Super Dad came in and saved the day. She hopped on her new bike and rode off. She has mastered turning right and left, we just need to work on stopping!!!

Now being a second child myself, I understand the importance of having 2 of everything. I remember when ever my brother had a birthday, I always got something too. My girls are so close in age, and too young to understand why one gets something that the other doesn't. Of course I won't keep this up forever, however this year I have got Riles some goodies as well.

To Muscat, Oman.......

We are very excited about the many changes that lie ahead. Change can be very stressful, but I believe that it can also promote so much growth. We are looking forward to experiencing a new country, culture and having the opportunity to travel and explore the beauty of the Middle East. We will be living very close to the beautiful pristine beaches, as living near water is essential for our family. As we say good-bye here, new beaches await us. Have a look, one is calling our names.........

At the Park

Darian comes up with some great ideas. This morning she decided that we should all go to the park.

When we got there, Riley was stuck to Daddy.

I was enjoying this moment, when I heard "MOM, LOOK AT ME"'. I looked over to find 'The Boss' at the very top of the climber :0

Okay, now that she got my attention, I decided to go and play....

What a morning. Now it was only 8am by this point...we had already put in a full day!!!!
